Introduction to the

Co-Founders

AMVIP was co-founded by Dr. Hj. Mohamad Kamal Bin Hj. Harun and Ir. Max Ong Chong Hup in May 2019
and the Association was officially approved by the Registrar of Societies on 25th September 2019.

Dr. Hj. Mohamad Kamal Bin Hj. Harun

Ts. Dr. Haji Mohamad Kamal Bin Haji Harun, FASc specialized in the areas of Corrosion Protection, Adhesion of Paints and Polymeric Barrier Coatings. He earned his PhD from the University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology. His areas of research are in metallic alloys, corrosion protection by paints and inhibitors, including the study of polymeric barrier coating degradation under atmospheric conditions as well as ionic barrier properties of polymeric coatings. He has also attended the Oxford Advanced Management and Leadership Program at Oxford University in October 2018 and the 7th ASEAN Senior Management Development Program organised by the Harvard Business School Club Malaysia (HBSCM).

He started his career as a lecturer at Institut Teknologi Mara in 1987, which then became Uiniversiti Teknologi MARA(UiTM), and was appointed as a Professor since 2007. He has held several management and leadership positions within and outside the university, and was appointed as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International, UiTM) in September 2017 before retiring in October 2020.

His expertise is also sought in the industry, as evidenced from the Master-classes conducted under the Institute of Materials Malaysia as well as courses conducted under other organizations, aimed at industrial personnel in the areas of corrosion protection. He has also successfully co-developed the IMM Standards on Fingerprinting of paints, raw materials and dried coatings based on FTIR for the oil and gas industry.

Dr. Hj. Mohamad Kamal was the President of IMM (2012 -2016). He is a Fellow member, of the Institute of Materials Malaysia (IMM).

Dr. Hj. Mohamad Kamal is also a certified Professional Technologist by the Malaysian Board of Technologist (MBOT). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), Fellow of The Malaysian Solid State Science & Technology Society, Fellow member of the International Institute of Plantation Malaysia (IIPM) as well as a member of the Board of Governers of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology.

Ir. Max Ong

Ir. Max Ong

Ir. Max Ong graduated from Queen Mary University of London in 1977 with B.Sc.(Hons) in Materials Engineering. He has over 40 years’ experience in Corrosion Control covering Protective Coatings, Decorative Paints, Cathodic Protection, Corrosion Monitoring & Inspection, Fire Proofing Coatings, Thermal Spray Coatings, Failure Analysis and Materials Testing & Selection, as a manufacturer, technical sales specialist, service contractor, and Corrosion Consultant. He was involved in manufacturing of Sacrificial Aluminium, Zinc and Magnesium Anodes in DIMET Singapore (1980-1982) and MPE Malaysia (1990-2005). He was involved in paint manufacturing and technical servicing in DIMET-AMERON Protective Coatings (1982-1989) and Leighs Paints (2006-2009).

He is currently Executive Director of Norimax Sdn. Bhd. (a company manufacturing Sacrificial Anodes and providing Thermal Spray Coatings & Corrosion Protection Services) since 2009 and Director of JOTAC Academy Sdn. Bhd. (a company providing TVET Training) since 2014.

  • Associate Members shall not have any voting rights in the Association.

CORROSION FORUM

Nottingham University Future Students Centre in Menara Axis, Petaling Jaya

AMVIP, in collaboration with the University of Nottingham Malaysia, proudly hosted the AMVIP Forum on Project Optimization in Corrosion, which was held on 16th May 2024 at the Nottingham University Future Students Centre in Menara Axis, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The event was a resounding success, showcasing brilliant presentations from industry leaders in corrosion control and management within the energy sector.

We are grateful for the insightful contributions from :-

  1. Ts. Lai Kok Leong, Senior MCI Engineer at Sarawak Shell Bhd., who shared an innovative overview of Full Cathodic Protection Surveys for Subsea Buried Pipelines using Non-Contact Field Gradient Sensors.
  2. Ir. Dr. Ramesh Ramasamy, Technical Director at Azakti Energy, who presented innovative and cost-saving solutions in Ageing Offshore Well Structural Integrity Modelling, Assessment & Rehabilitation in the Arabian Gulf region.
  3. Mr. Jason Yap, CEO of Pluperfect Technology Sdn Bhd, who highlighted the many facets of Viscoelastic Wrapping Systems for External Corrosion Protection, and Mr. Brian Lim, Operations Manager, who presented on Thermal Insulative Coating Technologies as ideal solutions for Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI).
Pn. Siti Haslina Ramli graciously chaired the event as Chair of the AMVIP Task Force on Project Optimization. Mr. Kang Kim Ang as Chair of the AMVIP Corrosion Focus Group skillfully moderated the panel discussion that followed, fostering engaging interactions and exchanges of ideas among the attendees.

Advisor Ir. Ong Hock Guan emphasized the importance of integrating advanced corrosion control technologies to extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure, highlighting the cost savings and safety improvements these innovations can bring to the industry.

Ir. Max Ong shared his thoughts on the evolving landscape of corrosion management, stressing the need for continuous learning and adaptation to new methods and technologies to stay ahead of corrosion challenges.

The discussions and knowledge shared were truly inspiring, reflecting the ongoing commitment of these companies to drive progress and innovation in corrosion science and engineering.

INSULATION FORUM

Nottingham University Future Students Centre in Menara Axis, Petaling Jaya

7th March 2024

A Half-Day Forum on Insulation was held on Thursday 7th March 2024 at the Nottingham University Future Students Centre in Menara Axis, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. This Free Event was organized in collaboration with the University of Nottingham Malaysia and co-sponsored by Temperlite Insulation Sdn. Bhd., Abadi Oil & Gas Services Sdn. Bhd. and Armacell Engineering System Sdn. Bhd. and was attended by 50 participants. Three Speakers delivered short presentations relating to potential innovations for better management of insulation issues followed by open discussions and brainstorming session aimed at identifying potential solutions to insulation issues such as solving Corrosion Under Insulation, insulation skills improvements, and real-time monitoring performance of insulation systems.

There were 3 presentations:-

FIRST TFPO FORUM

Kelab Golf Negara Subang in Kelana Jaya, Selangor.

7th December 2023

A Half-Day Forum to kick-off the AMVIP Task Force on Project Optimization was held on Thursday 7th December 2023 at Kelab Golf Negara Subang in Kelana Jaya, Selangor. This Free Event was co-sponsored by Temperlite Insulation Sdn. Bhd., Corrtrol Synergy Sdn. Bhd. and Norimax Sdn. Bhd. and was attended by 80 participants. The event was Co-Chaired by the Chairman of this Task Force, Puan Siti Haslina Ramli (from PETRONAS GTS) and Vice-President of AMVIP, Ir. Pau Kiew Huai (from Dialog Group Berhad). Puan Siti Haslina presented an overview about the Task Force’s objectives and plans. En. Mohd Zamri Jaafar from PETRONAS GTS then presented views from an Operator relating to welding issues during the fabrication of Oil & Gas facilities. This was followed by En. Faizal Hassan from Dialog Group Berhad highlighting site issues during EPCC project executions. The Three Speakers delivered short presentations relating to project execution and implementation issues encountered by all parties involved in a project including the Owner/Operator, Engineering Consultant, EPCC Contractor, Sub-Contractors, Materials & Equipment Vendors, and Specialist Consultants/Academicians covering specifically on Materials, Vibration & Insulation (MVI) fields. The ultimate aim of this Task Force is to help the industry identify potential solutions for better management of projects to keep costs, time schedules, quality, safety, and workmanship within the budgeted expectations.

A team of 7 EXCO members met with Tuan Haji Bacho Pilong, Senior Vice President of Project Delivery & Technology PETRONAS, at an Appreciation Lunch hosted by the Association of Materials Vibration Insulation Practitioners Malaysia (AMVIP). The team, led by Ir. Max Ong Chong Hup (Secretary-General of AMVIP) and Puan Siti Haslina (EXCO Member of AMVIP), briefed Tuan Haji Bacho on the 1st AMVIP 2022 Conference and the success of the event held in July 2022. On behalf of AMVIP, Ir. Max highlighted the conference delegates were impressed with the video sharing session presented by Tuan Haji Bacho during the Conference, in particular “ The Journey “.

One of the matters that arose from the conference was a proposal to set up a number of task forces comprising of representatives from oil companies, contractors, suppliers, consultants and academicians to improve project delivery with cost efficiencies and best practices. Tuan Haji Bacho supports such initiative as it creates a healthy environment for all stakeholders and encourages continuous improvement and innovation. Such cooperation will promote open communication amongst all stakeholders and can contribute towards sustainability in areas of materials, vibration, insulation and corrosion. Pn. Siti Haslina Ramli, Principal - Materials, Corrosion & Inspection (MCI) of GTS PETRONAS accepted the challenge to co-ordinate this project under AMVIP.

The AMVIP Networking Golf 2022 on 23rd July 2022 started off on a beautiful, bright and sunny day. 16 golfers participated in this friendly game held at the Kota Seriemas Golf & Country Club in Negeri Sembilan. This event which provided opportunities for networking as well as reminiscing with old acquaintances, was sponsored by CorrTrol Synergy Sdn Bhd, Jotac Academy Sdn Bhd, Norimax Sdn Bhd and UES.

The champion of the challenge was Foo Hwa Chit. The 1st and 2nd runners-up were Pau Kiew Huai and Steward Siran respectively. Each received their prizes from the Deputy President of AMVIP, Dato’ Senu Mohd Noor. CONGRATULATIONS to the winners!

1st AMVIP Conference and Exhibition 2022

The successful 1st AMVIP Conference and Exhibition 2022 was held on 21st July 2022 at the Sofitel Hotel, Damansara City in Kuala Lumpur. 114 eager participants attended this one-day conference and exhibition, where the theme centred on Innovations and Sustainable Technologies for the New Era. Interests were high, with subjects reflecting issues concerning insulation, vibration and materials. The 9 speakers had the latitude to present their cases as well as promote their products and services. There were 12 companies exhibiting a wide range of products and services at the hall adjacent to the conference.

The highlight of the day was a special video presentation by Tuan Haji Bacho Pilong (Senior Vice-President, Project Delivery & Technology PETRONAS). In his speech, he encouraged global sustainability and cleaner environment through sustainable technologies and products. The video can be viewed HERE.

Friends and members of the Association of Materials Vibration and Insulation Practitioners, Malaysia (AMVIP) enjoyed the first Friendly Networking Golf on 26th September 2020 at the Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (KGSAAS) in Shah Alam. Sponsors include Ria Solutions Sdn Bhd, Serba Dinamik Sdn Bhd, Norimax Sdn Bhd and Corrtrol Services Sdn Bhd. 20 players in 5 flights vied to be the first champion of the first tournament organized by Harry Woon, the Chairman of Social Activities Committee, AMVIP.

The drum rolled for Khairul Anuar, who won the first prize with a score of 36. Ho See Chai was second and Dr. Zulkarnian Kedah third.
